Zanzibar | After breakfast, we meet our local guide and depart for a full day tour of the island. We learn about Zanzibari history as we visit some of Stone Townâs most historic buildings. Later, we take a boat to Prison Island to see giant tortoises and enjoy some snorkelling, with equipment provided. Zanzibar | Most of today is at leisure to explore Stone Town independently. You may wish to visit museums, browse the tiny bazaars or sample some of Zanzibarâs excellent restaurants. For early risers, a visit to the morning market is highly recommended. At around 3pm, we will transfer to the airport for a short late afternoon flight to Dar es Salaam, where we will stay overnight before flying onwards to the Comoros Islands the following morning. Private group transfers will be provided between Dar es Salaam airport and our hotel. Depending on traffic, the journey will take approximately 30 minutes. Comoros | Grande Comore Island Tour After breakfast, we set off on a full day tour of Grande Comore. We drive across the island from the foothills of Mount Karthala, an impressive active volcano, to the high plateau of Diboini to view extinct craters. We continue to the agricultural cooperative in Mbeni, where we visit a ylang ylang distillery and a vanilla pod warehouse. After lunch, we hope to encounter lemurs and tortoises, as well as learn about the legendary coelacanth fish. We then visit a dramatic rock formation shaped like a dragon and stop at the enchanting Salt Lake, whose colour can vary from white to turquoise blue. On our return to Moroni, we stop at the beautiful white sand beaches of Galawa and Chomoni for a swim in the Indian Ocean. After breakfast, we set out on a full day exploration of southern Grande Comore, beginning with a visit to the historic village of Itsandra. Here we explore the old fortress and the palace of the Ignafamba tribe, before continuing to a traditional witchcraft house to gain an insight into local customs and beliefs. Returning to Moroni, we visit the national museum and explore the medina, with its maze of narrow alleyways, bustling markets and colourful fabric shops. Lunch is served at a local seafood restaurant. In the afternoon, we travel south to the wetlands and mangroves of Iconi Marabou Lake, an important biodiversity site rich in birdlife and coastal vegetation. Nearby, we stop at the dramatic cliffs associated with the islandâs slavery era, where local legend tells of women who chose to throw themselves into the sea rather than face enslavement. We later continue to the spice plantations of Kafouni, where we discover some of the islandâs aromatic crops and visit a traditional ylang distillery before returning to Moroni. After breakfast, we meet our guide for a morning tour of the island. We visit the MUMA MusĂ©e de Mayotte, offering insight into the islandâs history, traditions and natural heritage. The tour continues through mangrove swamps, past a volcanic lake and across expansive mudflats. Later, we return to the airport for our early evening flight to Reunion. On arrival, we are met and transferred to our hotel in Saint Denis, the islandâs capital.
